2026 Hay Test Results

Perennial peanut hay tested by the University of Florida (UF), University of Georgia (UGA), and Equi-Analytical. Five distinct lab analyses cover the June, July/August, and September cuttings. These historical results describe the tested material, not every bale currently in stock.

How to read these results

  • Nutrient percentages are on a dry-matter basis. Moisture and dry matter use the original as-sampled PDF values. As-sampled protein is shown separately.
  • Averages are arithmetic means of the available unique lab analyses, equally weighted per analysis. Each metric shows its own result count (n); missing values are not treated as zero. These are not yield-weighted or guaranteed lot specifications. Five analyses do not necessarily mean five independent harvest lots; UF and UGA may have analyzed material from the same June cutting.
  • The duplicated June UGA PDF is counted once. The August PDF contains two different samples, both counted. UF's DOCX correspondence is not an extra test.
  • The UF spreadsheet's dry-matter nutrient basis was confirmed by the farm. Its 96.34% scan dry matter is excluded from bale moisture averages because sample preparation is undocumented.
  • Unknown collection dates remain unknown. Received and analysis/report dates are not substituted for sample dates. The July UF scan belongs to the June sample set based on its accompanying correspondence.
  • RFQ and RFV are different indices; DE and ME are different energy measures. In-vitro and estimated digestibility methods are not pooled.

What the reports show - and do not show

  • Crude protein spans 17.60-20.17% dry matter. The first-cutting average is 19.64%, the second is 18.65%, and the September sample is 17.60%. Differences can reflect cutting, sample preparation, or laboratory method; this is not a controlled comparison.
  • UGA's as-sampled moisture readings are 16.4%, 16.1%, and 17.6%, versus 9.7% for September. The 14.95% overall mean is historical, not a current storage-moisture guarantee.
  • UF ESC + starch is 7.96% dry matter; September is 10.70%. September NSC (WSC + starch) is 15.30%. These are different carbohydrate definitions; do not present them as interchangeable or claim all cuttings are low-sugar.
  • UGA nitrate results range from 1,444 to 2,175 ppm dry matter. These are reported as nitrates, not nitrate-nitrogen. Discuss the actual sample, species, physiological state, and total diet with a veterinarian or nutritionist before making a feeding decision.
  • September DE is 1.17 Mcal/lb dry matter (about 2.58 Mcal/kg), or 1.05 Mcal/lb as sampled. This is one sample, not a cross-cutting energy average.
  • No supplied report includes an alkaloid, mycotoxin, herbicide-residue, or microbiological safety assay. These results do not certify zero contaminants or suitability for every horse.

  • The accompanying June-sample correspondence reports arrival June 24 and analysis July 7. The exact collection date is not supplied.
  • The farm confirmed that nutrient percentages in the UF spreadsheet are on a dry-matter basis.
  • The spreadsheet reports 96.34% dry matter for the scanned material. Sample preparation is not documented, so this is not used to estimate bale moisture or in the as-sampled moisture/dry-matter averages.
  • The DOCX is accompanying correspondence, not an additional lab analysis; its AI-generated summary is not a source of measurements.
  • UF reports in-vitro digestibility at 30/48 hours (76.15%/79.43%) and NDF digestibility (35.54%/43.38%). These are not averaged with UGA estimated digestibility, which uses a different method.
